l am in the process of choosing one of these careers, and had a few questions. How many hrs per week and how often you get called in for work during off hrs, are they much different between the two? When time comes around for a family, i'm just concerned with how much time my job can take away from them.thanks a bunch for anyone who can help me out! =)

optometry and Ophthalmologist question about work hours.

My optomotrist sets his own hours and the ones at Wal-Mart, Sam is Club and the like have fairly 9-5ish hours according to the notices I've seen.

If you do not want your work to interfere with your family life than only work part time. You'd not make as much money but you'd be with your family. You could always work out of your home and be there constantly.

optometry and Ophthalmologist question about work hours.

I would choose Optometry if time is an issue...You will make good money and have good hours..Now, if you choose Opthalmology, You will be called after hours..(not too much) you will make GREAT money. But the school is not as long for Optomitrist. and you will start making money now.

optometry and Ophthalmologist question about work hours.

The hours r almost the same. It is just that the ophthalmologist spends some of them in surgery in addtion to all the stuff that an optometrist does.
The training for ophthalmology is much more rigorous because u must go through medical school after college before doing ur ophthalmology residency.
The hours r typically from 8 to 5 Mon- Fri & sometimes Saturday mornings.
There r not a lot of emegency calls unless u live in an area where u r the only eye doctor.
