l have had drastic loss of vision in one eye over a period of one year. I've been to my ophthalmologist, and the only thing he can find is a small spot on the retina. He is sending me to a retinal specialist. He has ruled out the following:
cataracts
Macular degeneration
retinopothy
detached retina
Any ideas on what this could be?I am getting a bit nervous....

yes..sorry..l forgot that one.He did do a glaucoma test, and it is not that either...

Problems with the retina

Seeing a retinal specialist is the right move. Beyond that, other options, like a neuro-ohpthalmologist, will be things you can look at. You will get a diagnosis eventually, just try to be patient- doctors are only human.

How old r u & r u a smoker? Your general ophthalmologist should be able to tell u if u have cataracts. Because the general ophthalmologist would be the one to remove them, so I doubt its cataracts. You may have some changes in the retina which in that case would warrant u to see the retina specialist.

Macular Degeneration is mostly in elderly patients & more pronounced in smokers.

Cataracts is an age related change to the natural lens of ur eye which is in people who r over 50 unless ur were born with congenital cataracts

Retinopathy is in people with Diabetes or long use of any kind of high risk med like Amiodarone, Plaquenil or Prednisone.

A detached retina is unlikely u would have flashing lights, floaters, loss of va like a curtain or window shade covering ur vision.

Good luck! Always good to get more than one opinion

Problems with the retina

You are doing the best thing possible, which is going to see a retinal specialist.

Best wishes.

Problems with the retina

It is always good to get a second opinion.

Did you ask him about the intraocular pressure (pressure in your eye)? If its very high, it could be glaucoma.

EDIT: Now glaucoma is ruled out, then I guess it might be the following:

multiple sclerosis - ruled out if movement of the body is fine i.e. no problem with muscles

methanol poisoning - found in anti-freeze, can cause blindness
