It should be a no brainer but this is a very small office and nobody, especially the boss talks about money. l was told when l was hired l would get a bonus every four months based on the company profits. l work for an Ophthalmologist so my first bonus was at Christmas and included my Christmas bonus. Based on that date l should have gotten my next bonus in April or at least my first paycheck in May but nothing was given. We are not supposed to talk about our pay or bonuses in front of the other employees and the doctor always waits until the other two women go to lunch to inform me of my raises and my bonus. l was really counting on that bonus Friday but nothing was said and no check. l was devastated. l figured since it was a short day he was waiting until today to say something. Nothing. Now what? l just do not feel comfortable asking him where my bonus is since l have only been working there for 8 1/2 months and he is so touchy about talking about money. My ''office manager'' is useless. All she ever says about anything is, talk to the doctor. Should l just keep my mouth shut and wait and see if it comes at the end of the month? Which is really a month late. This is a very weird, uncomfortable and nerve wrecking situation since l was promised this money when l was hired and had it budgeted into May is bills a LONG time ago. :(

I would wait until the end of the month and then approach your boss. Money is tight right now, and if they are not very busy right now, then that is why you may not be getting anything. If the office is not extremely busy, then the doctor is not paid a lot for the visits, then he cannot put out a lot for his workers. I hope that this clears things up.

NEVER count on a bonus that is promised based on profits. That is mistake number one. You should always budget accordingly (as if u do not have or do not expect to have any extra income). When the bonus or extyra money comes along, it is like a little surprise. If it really bothers u that nothing has been said, talk to the doctor. You have a right to know, but he also has a right to not pay bonuses. Do u know that the company made a profit these past 4 months? Perhaps there is not anything to be paid out. Another thing to consider is that most employees do not see any kind of bonuses from their employers at all, let alone right out of the gates (most make u wait a year or more to be entitled to profit sharing).

Perhaps the poor economy has something to do with his holding back on the bonuses but u can not know for certain till u ask him. If u cannot depend on the office manager about the specifics of the funds, perhaps, at the very least, if u said to her ''I want to ask Dr Browne about my bonus, is there anything I need to know? perhaps she will offer some useful tidbit. It is nerve wracking, for sure, but if u keep the questions neutral, like: ''I was hoping u could advise when I might expect my bonus- perhaps the next payroll?'' which puts the ball in his court but does not put him on the defensive. Good luck.

Hi,

You definitely need to say something. If u r calm & reasonable & business-like, u should not need to worry about approaching them.

I would try to speak to them first. If u do not get anywhere, start putting things in writing so u have records.

If you're worried about going behind the Office Manager is back, go & see them first. Let them know you're going to ask the Doc about it.

Ask the Doc if he has 5 minutes to speak to u about something important. Then over lunch or whenever, politely & calmly explain what is on ur mind.

Avoid anything emotive & anything that will cause any resentment, it gives the other side & excuse to shutdown & u do not get want u want.

Good luck.

Same situation going on at law firm I work at. Either email your boss or find a time to talk in private and ask if he has had time to review to the figures for bonuses. If you say nothing, expect nothing!
